This. Fucking. Book. Now we all know, Leigh Bardugo owns my soul. But when I say this book DELIVERED. Child, it gave me everything I wanted. All of my favourite characters had A JOURNEY and they were PRESENT and wow. I think there was one part in the final third of the book that I felt was a little rushed but other than that, I don’t think I have any qualms about this book. And I promise I’m not just saying that because I would die for Bardugo and pretty much all of the characters she creates. This book was gripping and thrilling and the ending sent me feral.

Yet again, Cassie Clare has served me up a perfect little comfort read. I feel so at home in the world of shadowhunters, especially when a Herondale and a Carstairs is at the forefront of the story.

Mama. I have read pretty much all of Maas’s books so I know she likes her smut, but this? This was on another level. And as much as I live for a good sex scene, there were a few times where I was flicking through the pages like… Lady where’s the plot? I went into this book excited to read about Nesta’s journey, and whenever the book focused on that and the friendships she was building with Emerie and Gwyn I was so so so here for it. And honestly? I was so disappointed that Maas not only (very predictably) decided to make Cassian her ‘mate’ (🤮) but to also kind of single that out as the main source of Nesta accepting her trauma and who she is.

It’s weird to be so disgusted by a book and yet so captivated by it at the same time. This book was difficult for me to read, but also one I felt compelled to finish. My Dark Vanessa is, in a way, sort of a modern version of Lolita. Vanessa herself even draws on this comparison in the book. But finally we get to see things from the point of view of the abused, rather than the abuser. While parts of the book turned my stomach to read, for the most part it was strange to feel a sad sort of understanding with Vanessa. The book is, with no doubt, compelling and stunningly written, but even though I was recommended it by a friend I find it strange (maybe even difficult) to talk about. How can you praise a book with such a subject matter? It seems weird. What I know I can praise however, is Russel’s superb writing style. Her writing makes it easy to understand Vanessa’s thoughts and articulates her tumultuous emotions amazingly. It reflects how Vanessa changes between her teen years and adulthoods, and how things haunt her from one age to the next. The book is a strange kind of catharsis. One I will be thinking about for a while.

It’s been a hot minute since I actually read this, but it is finally review time! Like Barker & Scheele’s gender guide, I found the queer history guide accessable and easy to read. Though one of the main focuses of the book is on queer therory and how it has deleveloped over the years, the book also provides insight into how queer has grown as a movement. I’m very committed to reading the rest of this series. The guide to Feminism is next on my list, and I was super excited to hear about the announcement of Sexuality: A Graphic Guide!

Okay YES. Yes I bought another fucking Sarah J. Maas book god just let people enjoy things in PEACE. And did I enjoy this book? Damn right I did. Did it blow my mind? No. Maas seems to get a lot of hate, and yeah I get it, but there’s nothing wrong with just…. Liking a book. I was excited to see how Maas’s adult series would compare to her YA series, but I think the only thing more ‘adult’ when comparing Crescent City to her other books is that this one has more swearing, a lot of drug use, and everyones just very horny.
